Bengaluru’s Cocktail Renaissance: How the Garden City is Redefining India’s Bar Culture

Must read

Bengaluru, long revered as the beer capital of India, is undergoing a remarkable transformation, carving a niche for itself in the evolving cocktail culture of India. The city, known for its sprawling breweries and vibrant tech ecosystem, is now gaining recognition for its intimate, concept-driven cocktail bars that seamlessly blend craftsmanship, storytelling, and immersive experiences. This burgeoning cocktail revolution is not only reshaping Bengaluru’s nightlife but also positioning the city as one of the top emerging cocktail destinations in India and Asia.

Evolution of Bengaluru’s Nightlife Scene

For decades, Bengaluru’s nightlife has been synonymous with craft beer and expansive brewpubs, catering to its tech-savvy and cosmopolitan population. However, the landscape began to shift in recent years, driven by the changing preferences of a globally exposed, urban crowd. The pandemic further accelerated this transformation, with patrons seeking personalized, high-quality experiences over large, commercial establishments.

According to Vikram Achanta, Founder and CEO of Tulleeho and Co-founder of 30BestBarsIndia, the modern cocktail bar is more than just about serving drinks—it’s about curating a multi-sensory journey. “A great bar is not just defined by its cocktail programme, but by the entire experience—from glassware to music, from hospitality to ambiance—every detail matters,” he says.

Bengaluru’s Rising Stars

The city’s cocktail scene has received notable recognition, with five Bengaluru-based bars making it to the 30BestBarsIndia 2024 list:

  • Bar Spirit Forward (#2): Helmed by the legendary mixologist Arijit Bose, the bar is renowned for its craft cocktail programme and bespoke hospitality.
  • Soka (#3): An intimate, 38-seater bar in Indiranagar that combines culinary artistry with experimental mixology.
  • Muro (#16): A hybrid venue offering both classic and avant-garde cocktails, with a special mezzanine section for niche, experimental experiences.
  • The Reservoire: Known for hosting international guest shifts and takeovers, bringing global bar cultures to Bengaluru.
  • ZLB23 (#40 on Asia’s 50 Best Bars): The only Indian bar on the prestigious list, delivering a speakeasy-style experience inside the luxurious Leela Palace.

Craftsmanship Meets Intimacy

Unlike the larger-than-life brewpubs that once defined Bengaluru, the new wave of cocktail bars is characterized by small, intimate spaces that prioritize craftsmanship and personalized service. Patrons now seek out venues where they can engage directly with bartenders, learn about ingredients, and enjoy artisanal cocktails tailored to their preferences.

“The shift towards smaller, concept-driven bars reflects a growing desire for bespoke drinking experiences—where every cocktail tells a story,” says Prathik Shetty, Co-founder of The Reservoire.

Global Influence and Cross-Cultural Collaborations

Bengaluru’s ascent in the cocktail landscape is further bolstered by international guest shifts and bar takeovers, which have introduced global techniques and flavors to the city. Esteemed bars like Singapore’s Jigger & Pony, Tokyo’s SG Club, and Hong Kong’s ARGO have graced the counters of Bengaluru’s finest establishments, offering immersive experiences to both bartenders and patrons.

“These collaborations have been instrumental in raising the bar—literally—by offering local talent a platform to learn and experiment with global mixology techniques,” says Avinash Kapoli, Co-founder of Jamming Goat 3.0.

Storytelling Through Mixology

What sets Bengaluru’s cocktail bars apart is their dedication to storytelling and artistry. Bars like ZLB23 transport patrons to Kyoto with their plush interiors and jazz performances, while Dali & Gala weave surrealist love stories into their cocktail presentations. Meanwhile, Soka’s Vasane Menu explores the aromas of Bengaluru through a five-cocktail menu in collaboration with local artist Indu Anthony.

“Today’s patrons want to know the journey behind their drink—where the ingredients come from and how they’re crafted,” says Niharika Raval, Co-founder of Muro. “It’s about creating an emotional connection with every sip.”

Bengaluru’s Cocktail Revolution in Numbers

The city’s rising prominence is reflected not only in rankings but in consumer preferences and spending habits. According to industry estimates:

  • Bengaluru’s premium cocktail segment has seen a 35% growth year-on-year since 2022.
  • The average spend on craft cocktails in the city has increased by 20% in the last two years.
  • Over 25 boutique bars have opened since 2023, with more expected to launch in 2025.

Sustainability and Local Ingredients

The future of Bengaluru’s bar scene is also leaning towards sustainable practices and local ingredients. Bars like Muro and Soka are sourcing ingredients from local farmers and producers, while ZLB23 is experimenting with zero-waste cocktails.

“This movement isn’t just about serving drinks—it’s about creating responsible experiences that honor local culture and resources,” says Shetty.

What Lies Ahead?

As Bengaluru’s cocktail culture continues to flourish, experts predict that the city could soon rival Mumbai and Delhi as one of India’s top bar destinations. The next wave is expected to bring more concept bars, immersive pop-ups, and innovative cocktail programmes rooted in Indian flavors and traditions.

“The future of Bengaluru’s bars lies in creating experiences that blend artistry, sustainability, and cultural storytelling,” says Kapoli. “We’re only just scratching the surface of what this city can offer.”

Conclusion

Bengaluru’s cocktail renaissance is not merely a fleeting trend but a testament to the city’s evolving cultural landscape. With a growing emphasis on innovation, collaboration, and intimate experiences, Bengaluru is fast becoming a prominent player on both the Indian and global cocktail stage. As mixologists continue to push the boundaries of creativity, the city is poised to redefine India’s bar culture for years to come.
