Aman Gupta was born on March 4, 1982, in Delhi, India. Raised in a middle-class family, Gupta’s early years were marked by a strong emphasis on education and discipline. He attended the prestigious Delhi Public School (DPS), R.K. Puram, where he completed his schooling in the Commerce stream in 1998. His academic journey was heavily influenced by his father, Neeraj Gupta, who envisioned a stable and prosperous future for his son in the field of Chartered Accountancy.
Heeding his father’s advice, Aman enrolled in the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) in 1999, pursuing a career that promised stability and respect. Despite his initial lack of interest in the field, Gupta’s determination saw him through, and by the age of 20, he had successfully completed his CA, becoming one of the youngest Chartered Accountants in India.
After earning his CA credentials, Aman Gupta joined Citibank as an Assistant Manager, where he worked until 2005. However, the monotony of corporate life soon left him yearning for something more dynamic and fulfilling. This led him to co-found Advanced Telemedia Pvt Ltd with his father in September 2005, marking his first foray into the world of entrepreneurship. As the CEO of the company, Gupta faced numerous challenges, and despite his best efforts, the business struggled to find its footing in a competitive market.
Undeterred by this setback, Gupta decided to further his education, with the hope that an advanced degree would provide the tools and knowledge needed to succeed in the business world. In 2010, he enrolled in the Indian School of Business (ISB) for an MBA in Finance and Strategy. As part of an exchange program, he also attended the Kellogg Graduate School of Management, where he earned an MBA in General Management and Marketing.
Armed with a new perspective and a wealth of knowledge, Gupta returned to the corporate world, taking on roles at KPMG as a Senior Management Consultant and at HARMAN International as Director of Sales. These positions not only honed his skills but also provided valuable insights into the workings of large-scale businesses.
In November 2013, Aman Gupta, along with Sameer Mehta, co-founded Imagine Marketing Services Private Limited, the parent company of boAt. The idea behind boAt was simple yet powerful: to create high-quality, affordable consumer electronics that catered to the needs of India’s growing millennial market. The brand launched its first product, a rugged Apple charging cable, which quickly became a bestseller on Amazon.
Recognizing the potential of the market, Gupta and his team expanded boAt’s product range to include headphones, earphones, speakers, and other audio accessories. By 2019, boAt had become a leader in the Indian music earwear industry, with a market share of over 48%. The brand’s success was driven by Gupta’s innovative marketing strategies, which included tapping into social media, leveraging influencer partnerships, and creating a strong brand identity that resonated with young consumers.
Aman Gupta’s entrepreneurial journey took a new turn when he was invited to join the panel of investors on Shark Tank India, the Indian adaptation of the popular American reality TV show. As one of the “sharks,” Gupta quickly gained a reputation for being the most entertaining and relatable investor on the show. His down-to-earth demeanor, coupled with his sharp business insights, made him a fan favorite.
On the show, Gupta has invested in several promising startups, including companies like Shiprocket, Bummer, and Skippi.
